Cricket Carpet Shockpad: Questions & Answers

Should I include a shockpad at all?

We recommend shockpads are installed under all cricket carpets laid on dynamic stone bases. Combined they provide the best playing characteristics, prolong the lifespan of the carpet, maintain the base and provide a small degree of comfort for the players.

Shockpads aren't a visible or tangible part of an artificial grass wicket 'system', however they are definitely worth having.

Why does a shockpad extend the life expectancy of the carpet surface?

Stone bases are abrasive, and the granite 6mm to dust layer particularly so. Day to day use means that there is always a small amount of friction and movement of surfacing on stone. By adding the tough cricket shockpad between them, that rubbing or friction is removed from the sensitive backing of the cricket carpet. Therefore the carpet itself is not going to wear from the back and consequently will last longer.

Does a shockpad suffer from wear?

No. It is tough enough and dense enough not to suffer any damage from the stone base. It's what it is designed to do.

Can I reuse an existing shockpad?

Usually, yes. Because of that it is worth looking at replacing your cricket carpet before it wears through - ie before it has holes, rather than after. Once that happens the shockpad too may become damaged and will also require replacing. As a general rule of thumb, if you replace the carpet early enough, you shouldn't need to replace the shockpad. Leave it too late, you probably will.

How do I maintain a shockpad?

No artificial cricket 'system' is maintenance free, so it is important to have a regime in place. That includes levelling, rolling and maintaining the base which may periodically involve lifting and relaying the carpet and shockpad. The shockpad on its own doesn't require any specific maintenance.

Is it as porous as the carpet surface?

Yes, and as the stone base beneath.

I require a length not listed, can you help?

Yes, our shockpads are cut down from bigger roll lengths, so can be cut to any full metre length you require. Usually these work out at the same pro rata m² price as the nearest standard size, but please contact our sales office on 01858 545789 with your requirements.

Are there any cheaper alternatives?

No.

Can I double up to change playing characteristics?

Yes. Occasionally cricket clubs want to create slightly different characteristics in neighbouring practice bays, and this can be achieved by using two layers, or no shockpad at all. In most cases though, a single shockpad layer is sufficient to provide all the other main stabilising and base maintenance minimising benefits.

Can I install a shockpad myself, either on a new build or resurfacing project?

Yes, absolutely. It's really easy. See our Cricket Downloads section for information on how to do it yourself, and other specifications and advice.
