PVC Backed Practice Turf is a reverse needled, fibre bonded needle punch carpet with a post carpet manufacture special PVC backing applied to add weight, stability and grip. It is suitable for use on any flat, hard and level surface – both indoors or out.

This product is manufactured for us in the UK by Playrite and comes with their standard conditional 5 year product warranty, subject to fair wear and tear, correct usage, maintenance.

Please note that the make up of this product means that the initial 'curl' caused by rolling it up on the tight carpet core means that it may require a little time to settle down and lie flat. How long that takes depends on individual conditions. If laid outside in full sun for example it will warm through and settle quicker than if indoors and cold.

PVC Backed Practice Turf Cricket Carpet: Common Question and Answers

What is needlepunch?

Needlepunch is a versatile textile manufacturing process that involves interlocking fibres together to create a non-woven fabric. The process is widely used in various industries due to its durability, strength and cost effectiveness. The manufacturing process involves vertically punching barbed needles through a web of fibres, entangling them together. It is often used on industrial and office carpets. To describe what it looks like, we say it's a bit like a Brillo Pad, but green.

What is the PVC Backing?

PVC, or Polyvinyl chloride, is the world's third-most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer. It is added to the needlepunch carpet as a second and separate manufacturing process to help the carpet lay flat, to add ballast, and to provide grip so the loose laid carpet doesn't move when laid and in use - even on the smoothest and shiniest, varnished indoor floor. There are many benefits of using PVC Backed Practice Turf, not least of which is cost and value.

Will I require a shockpad?

No, not with PVC Backed Practice Turf. Just roll out the carpet as supplied and that's it.

How do I maintain a PVC Backed Practice Turf needlepunch cricket carpet?

It depends where it is laid, what it is laid on and how it is used and stored. For indoor use, the carpet should be rolled up tightly on the carpet core provided and stored sensitively in line with the manufacturers' instructions when not in use. It should not be creased, folded or crushed when not in use. Externally if left out in-situ, a routine maintenance regime should be in place to kep it clean and free of detritus to get the maximum life and performance out of it. Please see our Cricket Downloads section for our recommended maintenance advice on external carpets.

Is it an all weather carpet?

Yes, but with one caveat. We can't claim that it is truly all-weather because snow will settle on the carpet and we recommend not removing it in case you damage the carpet surface whilst doing so. However PVC Backed Practice is also an indoor carpet too, which is, of course, unaffected by weather conditions.

Why are there only a few lengths available?

The standard lengths are 10m 12m, 15m and 20m, with an additional full length 30m match wicket. PVC Backed Practice Turf Carpets shorter than 10 metres are lighter and may move when in use. Conversely, when longer than 20m they become much more heavy to move. Therefore 30m Match length wickets are best left rolled out in-situ, as they are too bulky and difficult to move easily.

Why is PVC Backed Practice Turf only available in a 2.0 metre width?

That's principally because the PVC backing machine is only 2 metres wide. This can been seen as a benefit, as the tight 2.0m width encourages bowlers to bowl accurate, straighter deliveries.  If you have to build a new concrete base to lay the carpet on, a smaller 2 metre wide strip also saves a considerable amount of material and cost compared to wider 2.74m or 4 metres strips.

Are there any alternatives to PVC Backed Practice Turf?

Only for outdoor use. Externally, the most obvious alternative is our standard Practice Turf carpet that can be permanently fixed. However for indoor use, PVC backed Practice Turf is our only option.

Can I lay PVC Backed Practice Turf myself?

Yes, it's the only way to do it. Roll it out and pad up.

Can I get a sample?

Don't forget to provide us with your full postal address and let us know which products you are interested in, and we will post a sample out to you.
