Mini Soccer 7v7/5v5 Buying Guide

What size are Mini Soccer 7v7 / 5v5 goals?

3.66m wide x 1.83m high (12ft x 6ft) is the recommended goal size for 7v7 and 5v5 by the Football Association (The FA).

It's important to note that whilst 3.66m x 1.83m is the recommended size by the FA, 5-a-side is still commonly played in the UK using different size goals measuring 2.4m, 3.6m or 4.8m wide (8ft, 12ft or 16ft) and 1.2m high (4ft). We refer to those as "Traditional" 5-a-side goals.

Just to complicate things further, other football associations recommend different sizes for 5v5 and 7v7 football.

For 5v5, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) recommends the "Traditional" 5-a-side of 2.4m X 1.2m (8ft and 4ft), whilst the Irish Football Association (IFA) recommends the "Traditional" 5-a-side size of 3.6m x 1.2m (12ft x 4ft). Like The FA, the Welsh and Irish Football Associations recommend 3.66m x 1.83m (12ft x 6ft) for 7v7 football. The Scottish FA however recommends 4.88m x 1.83m (16ft x 6ft) goals for 9v9, 7v7 and 5v5 football.

If you're buying goals for an organised league or affiliated to a particular football association, it's worth checking which size is required.

What's the difference between freestanding and socketed goals?

Freestanding goals stand independently on grass or artificial surfaces and can be moved between sessions. They're the more versatile option for clubs using shared pitches or facilities, since they don't require any ground installation. Socketed goals slot into permanent ground sockets, making them more stable and better suited to dedicated pitches where the goals will stay in a fixed position. Complete socketed goal packages are available including nets, net clips, net supports and ground pegs, and we offer an installation service for socketed goals if required - contact our sales office on 01858 545789 for a quote.

Whilst freestanding goals are the more flexible option for venues, remember they must be securely anchored to ensure safe use. Some freestanding goals will include integral counterweights to eliminate this issue, however these are usually more expensive. If the goals will remain static, or if there's a risk theft or vandalism, socketed goals may be the preferred option.

What's the difference between steel and aluminium goals?

Steel goals are typically heavier but more affordable. Heavy duty galvanised steel goals are great for locations with constant or high volume use.

Aluminium goals are lighter, naturally rust-resistant, and easier to move between sessions. For pitches where goals are moved frequently, aluminium is usually worth the extra cost.

Which anchors do I need?

Freestanding goals must be securely anchored. The best method depends on the surface and/or ground conditions:

On grass, U-pegs (ground anchors) driven into the base of the goal are the standard approach, and are often included in our freestanding goal packs. Earthworm screw anchors give a more secure fixing in harder or drier ground. Sufficient 'Handbag' style counterweights are also a popular option.

For artificial/3G surfaces and indoor use, handbag counterweights are the typical solution. Fence anchor chains are an alternative where a perimeter fence/wall is available.

Remember, self-weighted goals require no additional anchorage - the integral counterbalance handles stability without extra equipment.

Every freestanding goal must be securely anchored during use and when stored. Goals should never be left unsecured or unattended.

What about fence-folding goals?

Fence-folding Mini Soccer 7v7/5v5 goals are permanently hinged to the perimeter fence of a enclosed 3G pitch or Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA). When not in use they fold flat against the fence, keeping the pitch clear. This is a practical choice for MUGAs and synthetic pitches with limited storage, where goals need to be ready to use quickly without requiring anyone to carry them into position. They require a suitable perimeter fence and must be installed by a specialist. Ideally this type of goal should be installed at the same time as the MUGA or fence itself, as retro-fitting these into existing facilities can be very challenging.

Are Mini Soccer 7v7/5v5 goal packs worth it?

Each pack includes a pair of Mini Soccer 7v7/5v5 goals, nets and where appropriate net supports, wheels, pegs and anchors, bundled at a price lower than buying each component separately. Buying a goal pack ensures you get the best compatibility and price. However, we do recognise that you may have existing components already, so we do offer everything individually if required to allow you to only buy what you need.
