Lacrosse Goals & Nets Buying Guide

Are there different versions of lacrosse?

Field lacrosse is the traditional outdoor game, played on a large grass or artificial turf field. There are however significant differences between men's and women's field lacrosse. Men's field lacrosse allows full contact and players can be heavily padded up, whereas women's field lacrosse prohibits body checking.

Whilst there are significant differences in the rules of the game, the goals used for men's and women's field lacrosse are very similar. The Freestanding Competition Lacrosse Goal and Net offered by sportsequip have been manufactured to be suitable for use in either the men's or women's game.

A newer format, Lacrosse Sixes, is a condensed outdoor version played on a smaller field with six players per side, but uses the same goal size as field lacrosse.

Box lacrosse is an indoor variant played on a smaller surface enclosed by boards, with six players per side and a smaller goal. Box lacrosse goals are therefore not interchangeable with field lacrosse goals.

sportsequip only offer goals and nets suitable for field lacrosse (men's and women's) and Lacrosse Sixes.

World Lacrosse Approval & Certification

Whilst our Freestanding Competition Lacrosse Goals (LAC-010) aren't officially World Lacrosse Approved, they do meet the main regulation size requirements for men's, women's and Sixes Lacrosse, and can still be used in non-World Lacrosse competitions.

What do the World Lacrosse regulations say about goal specifications?

World Lacrosse regulations are very comprehensive and do vary slightly between men's, women's and Sixes lacrosse, but the main points to note are as follows:

Regulation field lacrosse goals measure 1.83m (6ft) wide and 1.83m (6ft) high, all inside measurements. The goal posts and crossbar are collectively referred to as the "pipes".

To meet regulation requirements for both men and women's lacrosse, the pipes should be made from metal tubing with an outside diameter of approximately 5.1cm (2in).

The pipes must be painted orange (orange or white is acceptable for women's lacrosse).

Goal posts must either be sunk directly into the ground with no ground pipes, or supported on flat metal bars no more than 1.2cm (0.5in) thick.

Nets must be pyramidal in shape and fastened to the goal posts, crossbar, and ground to prevent the passage of the ball. The mesh must not exceed 3.8cm (1.4in) to meet regulations for both men's and women's lacrosse. Goal nets may be any solid colour. The minimum twine thickness isn't specified in the regulations, but our Heavy Duty Lacrosse Nets use a 6mm thick which provide excellent longevity and robustness.

Why are lacrosse goals orange?

A brightly coloured goal is simply more visible for players and officials.

For the men's game and Sixes, World Lacrosse regulations require the frame of the goals to be orange. For the women's game, regulations require that the goals are either orange or white.

Our Freestanding Competition Lacrosse Goals are orange and will therefore be suitable for men's, women's or Sixes.

Safety & Anchoring Requirements

Our Freestanding Competition Lacrosse Goals (LAC-010) have been designed and manufactured to require no additional anchorage.

If you already own a set of lacrosse goals they may require anchoring to ensure safe use. Depending on ground conditions, 'U' Shaped Ground Pegs (PEG-021) or 'Handbag’ Counterweights (see ANC-005) may be suitable. Consult the documentation supplied with your goal for details.
